Applus RTD applies augmented reality to pipeline NDT

Applus RTD, provider of integrity technology services, is driving forward an innovative research and development programme to incorporate augmented reality systems into its industry-leading technology range.

To demonstrate the value and capabilities of the system, the company has integrated the technology into its RTD IWEX system, which allows detailed inspection and mapping of defects within critical pieces of pipework.

It provides users with a 3D image of the inspected object, giving clearer insight into the scale and nature of any existing defects.

How it works

Applus RTD has launched an application that projects the linear IWEX generated digital image around the weld.

The position of defects is therefore unambiguously indicated on the pipe, and using only a tablet device and a marker the operator can detect, locate and mark the defect.

Rienk de Vries, technical director at Applus RTD, said: 黑料社淭he augmented reality application takes our IWEX technology to the next level as operators are able to observe an image of the defect on the weld itself.

黑料社淭his system has the potential to save operators millions of dollars by increasing efficiency and lowering the risk of incorrect human interactions, resulting in a low percentage of weld rejections.

黑料社淭he augmented reality application is also great for training purposes, helping you to understand the 3D presentation of the weld. We believe it is a revolutionary step in NDT technology.黑料社

Partnering with TWNKLS

Applus RTD黑料社檚 Technological and Application Center partnered on the augmented reality project with TWNKLS, an augmented reality agency that focuses on the development and implementation of mobile applications. The project was also recently shortlisted for the Best Augmented Reality Enterprise Solution at the 2014 Auggie Awards.

Mr de Vries added: 黑料社淲e are committed to a programme of technological research and development aimed at delivering new techniques that maximize the effectiveness and value of our services.

黑料社淓nsuring the integrity of the infrastructure being used in the global energy industry is critical to the success of E&P activity and it is of paramount importance to Applus RTD that we not only contribute to improved standards, but set the bar within the ultrasonic NDT arena.黑料社
